Judge Permits States’ Lawsuit Against Meta for Social Media Addiction Claims

by admin477351

A federal judge has decided that a lawsuit involving Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, will proceed, rejecting the company’s request to dismiss it. The legal action, brought by 29 state attorneys general, accuses Meta of designing its social media platforms to foster addictive use among children, while allegedly hiding the potential negative effects.

The court’s decision allows the states’ claims regarding deceptive practices, unfair business conduct, and violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) to advance. The judge also found that Meta did not comply with certain parental notice and consent requirements as mandated by federal law. The states involved in the lawsuit argue that excessive use of Facebook and Instagram is linked to mental health problems in young people, such as anxiety and depression, as well as sleep disturbances and issues affecting education and daily life.

According to the allegations, Meta intentionally designed features to promote extended engagement on its platforms despite being aware of these risks. The company, however, denies these charges, maintaining that it is dedicated to supporting young users. Meta also contends that there is no universally accepted medical definition of “social media addiction.” Nonetheless, the judge determined that there are factual disagreements over whether the platforms were deliberately designed to encourage compulsive use, indicating that these matters should be settled in a trial.

While the case moves forward, it highlights the ongoing debate over the impact of social media on youth and the responsibilities of tech companies in safeguarding young users. As the trial progresses, the outcome could have significant implications for how social media platforms are regulated with respect to children’s safety and privacy online.
