California and New York have initiated legal action against the Trump administration over its plans to cancel renewable energy projects by buying back offshore wind leases. The states argue that this move threatens clean-energy development and could lead to higher electricity costs.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has filed a lawsuit in response to the federal government’s decision to buy back leases from Invenergy, a Chicago-based company, for an offshore wind project along the California coast. Similarly, New York Attorney General Letitia James is leading a coalition of states challenging agreements involving Invenergy and Bluepoint Wind. These agreements propose compensating energy companies for halting offshore wind projects under development.
The Trump administration has allocated billions of dollars to encourage companies to abandon these projects, a strategy defended by the Interior Department. The department claims that companies are pivoting towards fossil fuels and other energy sources deemed more reliable. However, James has labeled these buyback agreements as unlawful, expressing concern that cancelling wind projects may hinder states’ ability to meet growing electricity demands.
Amid this dispute, Bonta affirmed California’s commitment to pursuing clean-energy initiatives, despite the federal policy shift. The lawsuits underscore a mounting conflict between the administration and several states over the direction of offshore wind development and the broader U.S. energy transition.
