The United States Mint has started the production of a new commemorative $1 coin featuring former President Donald Trump, as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States, according to an announcement from the Treasury Department. The coin, set to be released this fall, is designed to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism in America, as stated by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He emphasized that the coin reflects the nation’s values and commitment to freedom.
Initially approved earlier this year, the coin’s final design has undergone slight modifications, notably featuring a gold-colored finish instead of being made from solid gold. The obverse side of the coin showcases a portrait of Trump accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the dates “1776–2026.” The reverse side displays the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, along with the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The initiative has stirred controversy due to existing federal laws that generally prohibit living presidents from being depicted on U.S. currency. Despite this, Treasury officials assert that the secretary possesses the authority to authorize specific commemorative coin issues in certain circumstances.
