India is actively engaging with U.S. officials to address issues stemming from newly revised U.S. visa policies that may impact Indian students and academic visitors. According to Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s External Affairs Ministry, the government is keeping a close watch on the situation and intends to continue discussions with Washington to alleviate any challenges faced by Indian citizens.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has enacted changes that tighten residency requirements for holders of F, J, and I category visas, which include international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals. Under these new rules, non-immigrant visa holders must adhere to fixed periods of stay, replacing a previous system that permitted extended residencies without ongoing federal supervision.
A significant alteration in the regulations affects F visa holders, specifically concerning the grace period allowed after the completion of studies. Students now have only 30 days, reduced from the earlier 60 days, to either depart the U.S., transfer to another educational institution, or modify their immigration status.
Indian authorities have acknowledged that visa and immigration policies fall under the jurisdiction of sovereign nations. Nonetheless, they have underscored their dedication to assisting Indian nationals abroad and lessening any adverse effects these updated rules may have.
