A federal judge has ruled against an injunction to halt the Trump administration’s planned land transfer of over 700 acres from a Texas federal wildlife refuge to SpaceX. The decision enables the continuation of a land swap with the aerospace company, despite objections from environmental and tribal groups.
U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. denied the request from plaintiffs seeking to prevent the transaction, which involves exchanging 683 acres of SpaceX-owned land for federal property within the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The land designated for SpaceX is closer to its launch site near the U.S.-Mexico border, potentially facilitating the company’s expansion.
The plaintiffs, comprising environmental and tribal organizations, expressed concerns about the environmental impact of the land transfer on local wildlife habitats, historical sites, and public access. They plan to continue their legal challenge, arguing that the transfer could pose increased risks to the area despite the judge’s decision.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had previously assessed the proposed exchange, concluding that it would not result in significant environmental impacts. The agency suggested that the deal might offer long-term conservation benefits and bolster habitat connectivity across South Texas.
In his ruling, Judge Rodriguez noted the plaintiffs failed to provide adequate evidence of potential environmental, cultural, or historical damage that might occur if the transfer proceeds while the lawsuit is underway. He also pointed out that stopping the land exchange could disrupt SpaceX’s development plans and contractual obligations.
