Chinese President Xi Jinping championed diplomacy after sealing a one-year trade pact with the US, remarking that “dialogue is always better than confrontation.” The successful meeting with President Donald Trump has also led to plans for reciprocal state visits in the coming year.
President Trump, who called the meeting “amazing,” announced he will visit China in April. President Xi is expected to visit the US, potentially in Florida or Washington D.C., sometime after that.
The new deal itself contains significant measures to de-escalate tensions. The US will slash some tariffs and export controls. China will buy US soybeans and, pivotally, will pause new restrictions on rare earth minerals, a sector Trump had threatened with heavy tariffs.
Beijing also secured a one-year delay on a restrictive US tech measure that would have targeted thousands of Chinese companies.
In his first public comments, Xi told the APEC forum in South Korea that nations must “join hands rather than letting go.” He warned against “breaking supply chains” and called for “genuine multilateralism” to ensure global stability.
