Levi’s UK is grappling with a new paradigm: when your biggest asset, your American heritage, becomes a significant risk. The company has formally warned that the political climate under the Trump administration could foster anti-American sentiment and damage its UK sales.
The alert was issued within its annual accounts, where the company also reported impressive growth, including a 23% surge in pre-tax profits to £9.6 million. This strong performance, however, is now seen as potentially vulnerable to geopolitical forces beyond the company’s control.
Levi’s concern is validated by the recent performance of other American brands. The electric car manufacturer Tesla saw its UK sales fall by more than 50% in July, a stark reminder of how quickly consumer preferences can change. Similar anti-US shopping trends have been reported in Canada.
The backdrop to this anxiety is the global trade disruption caused by President Trump’s tariff policies. These measures have strained relationships with key allies and are now facing legal challenges in the US. A recent court ruling declared the tariffs mostly illegal, but the final verdict will likely rest with the Supreme Court.
