Elon Musk has revealed a prototype of the Tesla Roadster 2 that incorporates rocket-thruster technology from his aerospace company, SpaceX. During a demonstration in Texas, the electric sports car was showcased executing aerial maneuvers using these thrusters after driving up a curved ramp, marking a significant step towards Musk’s vision of a potential flying car.
The prototype, equipped with rear-mounted thrusters, was remotely operated for safety reasons. Musk stated that the vehicle could perform complex movements like rolls and altitude adjustments. However, he acknowledged that the Roadster 2 might face legal challenges in certain jurisdictions due to its unique capabilities.
Set to enter production in 2028, the Tesla Roadster 2 is expected to be priced at over $200,000. Tesla plans to offer different versions of the vehicle, including a performance model and a variant with the thrust system. Additionally, a single-seat rocket version featuring a full flight system is proposed to be available on an invitation-only basis.
Tesla has emphasized that the flying capabilities of the Roadster 2 are not meant for use on public roads, highlighting the experimental nature of this technology. While the demonstration underscores Musk’s ambition to merge electric vehicle technology with rocket propulsion, the practical application, safety requirements, and regulatory compliance of such a vehicle remain key challenges.
