Lotus has eased supply chain worries and confirmed it will keep its Norfolk factory open. The sports car manufacturer reassured Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds that it has no plans to shut the Hethel plant, ending concerns about a potential move of production to the US and safeguarding 1,300 jobs.
The production pause at Hethel in mid-May was partly attributed to supply chain issues exacerbated by US tariffs. However, with these tariffs now due to be significantly reduced, Lotus is preparing to resume full operations. A Department for Business and Trade spokesperson confirmed Reynolds “was reassured by management that they are committed to their UK operations and have no plans to close their Hethel plant.”
Lotus itself affirmed on Saturday that “the UK is the heart of the Lotus brand” and its largest commercial market in Europe. While exploring “strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness,” the company’s commitment to its sole UK site remains firm.
The news provides stability for the local workforce and bolsters the UK’s automotive manufacturing reputation. The government’s ongoing support, including a £2.5 billion fund for capital and R&D, demonstrates a concerted effort to foster growth and competitiveness in the sector.
