Global Box Office Disappoints as Live-Action ‘Moana’ Underperforms

by admin477351

The live-action adaptation of Disney’s Moana has claimed the top spot at the North American box office, but its debut earnings of $43 million in the United States and Canada have not met industry expectations. Despite this, the film managed to bring in an additional $52 million globally, accumulating a worldwide opening total of $95 million. This is set against a significant production budget of $250 million.

Directed by Thomas Kail, the film sees Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui, while Catherine Lagaʻaia steps into the spotlight as Moana, marking her debut in the role. While Lagaʻaia’s portrayal has been well-received, the film has faced criticism for its close adherence to the plot of the 2016 animated original. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds a low critics’ score of 34%, though audience feedback has been somewhat more favorable. Many viewers, particularly families, have expressed a willingness to recommend the film, despite the mixed critical reception.

Disney has experienced both triumph and challenges with its live-action remakes in recent years. Some have soared at the box office, while others have encountered financial hurdles. Moana’s opening weekend is being compared to that of Snow White, which also experienced a lukewarm start in theaters.

Industry experts suggest that strong competition from other family-oriented films may have affected Moana’s opening weekend performance. Several PG-rated movies have also been vying for audience attention during the same period. Despite the initial slow start, analysts remain optimistic, noting that family films often enjoy sustained box office success over time, particularly when bolstered by positive word-of-mouth recommendations.
