The announcement follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff increase on selected Canadian products, including specific dairy items, alcoholic beverages, motor vehicles, and related goods. These additional tariffs are set to be implemented on August 19, raising concerns about the impact on the Canadian economy.
Carney condemned the U.S. tariffs, arguing that they breach the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and represent yet another unilateral trade move by Washington. He expressed strong disapproval of the measures, which he believes undermine the spirit of the trade agreement between the two nations and Mexico.
Despite the mounting trade dispute, Carney confirmed that he recently engaged in a conversation with President Trump.
